Rabbie’s Tour Ultimate Review: Loch Ness, Glencoe & the Highlands Day Tour

I have another Rabbie’s tour adventure for you. Loch Ness, the Highlands, and Glencoe, in my mind, they’ve always lived in misty, magical frames. The green here is a shade you can’t quite describe, and standing in the midst of it all, you’re struck by how untouched it feels. Surrounded by the vastness of the Highlands, I found myself at a complete loss for words, just incredibly grateful to be alive. And honestly? I wish that experience for everyone.

This was my third Rabbie’s tour and the second one on this trip, so I already knew I was in good hands. Rabbie’s is known for its small-group experiences and guides who are equal parts historians, comedians, and proud Scots. Our guide, Shea, lived up to every bit of my Rabbie’s praise, bringing the Highlands to life through stories, songs, and sweeping views.

What’s inside this post?

In this post, I’ll walk you through:

  • The full itinerary
  • What to expect
  • What stood out most
  • What I packed (and wish I packed)
  • And whether I’d recommend it to you

If you’re dreaming of lochs, mountains, and legends of the Highlands but don’t want to rent a car, this small-group tour might be the perfect solution. Get the link [here]

What Our Rabbie’s Tour to Loch Ness, Glencoe & the Highlands Looked Like

☀️ Early Start: Heading Out from Edinburgh

We left our Airbnb around 7:00–7:10 AM and walked to the bus station to check in for our Rabbie’s Tour by 7:45 AM. It was an early start, but well worth it — especially when the Highlands are calling.

Rabbie’s Tours magic all starts here at the Edinburgh bus station. Be sure to be on time!

🛑 First Stop: Callander (30-Minute Break)

We stopped in Callander, a charming mercat town, to grab coffee and stretch our legs.

💡 Tip: If you’re planning to do the circular boat ride on Loch Ness, this is the best time to grab a sandwich or snack. While Fort Augustus has food options, the timing can be tight.

🚐 Scenic Drive Through Glencoe & the Great Glen

We drove through the breathtaking Glencoe Valley and along the Great Glen, passing Ben Nevis (the UK’s highest mountain). Since we were making good time, Shea gave us 2–3 scenic photo stops. The views were jaw-dropping.

🏞️ Stop at Glencoe Visitor Centre

⚠️ Heads up: If you’re cruising Loch Ness, hot food isn’t allowed on board. Opt for a cold wrap or sandwich here instead.

There are great views of Ben Nevis and a replica of a traditional Highland home — a stone-walled, turf-roofed house once used by crofters. These historic dwellings were often shared with animals and served as permanent residences for centuries. It’s a nice little stop to explore while you wait to get back on the road.

🛶 Through Fort William & the Caledonian Canal

As we passed Fort William, Shea introduced us to the Caledonian Canal system, a brilliant feat of Scottish engineering.

💡 Did you know? The canal stretches over 60 miles, partially hand-dug in the early 1800s by famed engineer Thomas Telford. It connects lochs Ness, Lochy, Oich, and more.

During the Rabbie’s tour, we drove over the Caledonian Canal a couple of times and even got to see the lochs in action!

🚤 Fort Augustus & Cruising Loch Ness

Before our boat ride, we witnessed the Caledonian Canal lock system in action — a mesmerizing dance of boats, water, and gravity. Unexpectedly peaceful and fascinating.

Then came Loch Ness itself — moody, mysterious, and majestic. While Nessie didn’t make an appearance, the reflections on the water and the surrounding hills left me speechless.

🐉 I still think something could be lurking beneath the surface… but even if not, the views are worth it.

🥃 Surprise Stop: Dalwhinnie Distillery

Because we were ahead of schedule, Shea surprised us with a stop at Dalwhinnie Distillery, where we sampled two small drams of whisky. The distillery, set against rolling green hills, wasn’t on the original itinerary — but it became an unexpected highlight.

🐮 Final Stop: Taste of Perthshire (and Baby Coos!)

Our last break before returning to Edinburgh was Taste of Perthshire — part café, part rest stop, part baby-Highland-cow heaven. 🐮 Yes, they had baby coos. I was done for.

Sorry, I didn’t get the name of the big fella, but the baby’s name was Gus!

🌆 Return to Edinburgh

We arrived back around 8:00 PM, windswept, a bit tired, and absolutely full of stories and scenery.

🏞️ Highlights from Our Rabbie’s Tour to the Highlands, Loch Ness & Glencoe

  • Glencoe’s cinematic beauty — Especially the lone cottage with the waterfall behind it. Pure fairytale energy.
  • Loch Ness + the canal locks — The engineering of the lock system really stuck with me. Watching it in action was nerdy magic.
  • Our guide, Shea, she added so much heart, humor, and Highland folklore to the day.

We also passed through two of Scotland’s national parksLoch Lomond & The Trossachs and Cairngorms. The dramatic views along those drives, especially near the end of the day through the Cairngorms, were a final visual feast before heading back.

A highlight of this Rabbie’s tour was going out on Loch Ness. I may not have found Nessie, but I’m still a believer in its mystery!
And the main attraction of the Rabbie’s tour is the scenery, I tried to capture every beautiful loch we passed!

💬 Would I Do It Again?

Absolutely. I’d retake this trip and gladly bring a friend along. Rabbie’s never disappoints. While it’s a long drive, I wouldn’t miss those views for anything.
