Explore Stirling Castle, Loch Lomond & The Kelpies: Ultimate Rabbie’s Review

Stirling Castle

Looking for a Rabbie’s review? If you know me, you know I can’t resist a good castle. There’s just something about that blend of dramatic architecture, sweeping views, and layered history that instantly wins me over. So, when planning a return trip to Scotland with my travel partner and colleague Melanie, visiting Stirling Castle was non-negotiable.

We chose the Loch Lomond, Stirling Castle & The Kelpies day tour with Rabbie’s, a small-group tour company I’ve loved since my first experience years ago. This time, it ticked all the boxes: no rental car needed, max 16 guests, and a thoughtfully planned route through some of Scotland’s most iconic Lowland spots. Tour Itinerary Breakdown

🛑 Stop 1: The Kelpies (20 mins)

These towering sculptures are more than just impressive photo ops. The Kelpies are a tribute to Scotland’s industrial past and mythical folklore — blending art, history, and symbolism.

  • 📸 Great for photos
  • ☕ Coffee kiosk on site
  • 🐎 Fun Fact: The Kelpies are named Duke and Baron, inspired by real Clydesdale horses
  • 🌿 The park is pristine — like much of the countryside we visited

A misty, rainy day on Loch Lomond, but it only added to the beauty!

🌧️ Stop 2: Loch Lomond (approx. 1.5 hours)

Loch Lomond was misty, moody, and downright beautiful. Even in the rain, it had a kind of storybook stillness that felt surreal.

  • 🚶 Short 15-minute walk with loch views
  • 🥧 Lunch at The Oak Tree Inn in Balmaha — hearty steak pie for me, creamy mac & cheese for Melanie and then we shared a chocolate brownie for dessert! Perfect for the rainy weather outside.
  • 💡 Pro tip: use the restrooms in the pub — the nearby visitor center charges 50p

🏰 Stop 3: Stirling Castle (1.5–2 hours)

The grand finale. Stirling Castle sits atop volcanic rock and once guarded the gateway between the Highlands and Lowlands. It’s as dramatic in person as it sounds.

  • 🎟️ Entry ticket included in the tour
  • 🏰 Rich in history: think Mary, Queen of Scots, and William Wallace
  • 📖 Rose’s storytelling made everything click into place
  • 🌉 Bonus scenic drive: We passed through Duke’s Pass on the way — lochs, forests, and postcard-worthy views
Views from around the castle: Top – the gardens; Left – Wallace Monument; Right – the Great Kitchens.

🚐 Return to Edinburgh

We arrived back around 6:15 PM — full, tired, and so glad we didn’t skip this day. The return ride was calm and offered more landscape views while we all shared what we loved most.

A highlight I must add, we stopped to see not one but three of these beautiful coos!

Highlights & Personal Memories

  • Favorite Moment: Stirling Castle — every bit the showstopper I imagined
  • Unexpected Joy: The rain at Loch Lomond added a mysterious, magical vibe
  • Memorable Fact: Stirling was once Scotland’s capital and was known as the “Key to the Kingdom” due to its location
  • Pleasant Surprise: How clean, green, and well-kept the Lowlands were — it felt like Scotland takes real pride in its natural beauty

What to Pack & Prepare For

  • ✔️ Layers & Rain Gear
  • Scotland’s weather is a wild card. A light raincoat over layers worked perfectly for us.
  • ✔️ Comfortable Shoes
  • No strenuous hikes, but you’ll walk at every stop — sneakers or walking shoes are best.
  • ✔️ Portable Charger
  • You’ll want your phone charged for photos, maps, and playlist moments.
  • ✔️ Motion Sickness Remedies
  • Some winding roads, especially through the Pass — I was fine, but come prepared just in case.
  • ✔️ Snacks & Water
  • Rabbie’s does a great job planning stops, but a granola bar and water bottle go a long way.
